~F.A.Q. from author Bette Greene~
Q. I noticed most of your stories are set in Arkansas, why is that?
A. Because I grew up there and Arkansas has been living in my heart the longest. And good writing alwasy comes from the heart.
Q. Why is Carol Ann bullied? Isn't she like everybody else?
A. No, she's talented and burns with ambition. Often, anything different can be a target for bullies. Even "normal" is a target for bullies.
Q. I'm waiting on the list to read this book but I've been to Arkansas and I've never seen a Gypsy and how they roll along with their wooden caravans. Aren't they really from someplace else?
A. Gypsies started out in India more than a thousand years ago and they just started moving in a westerly direction and they haven't stopped. That's why you come across Gypsies anywhere in the world, even in Bainesville, Arkansas.
Q. Can you tell me more about Carol Ann?
A. Carol Ann's dad spends his time and his money on booze and Carol Ann's mom reads fortunes and pushes her daughter to marry Will Bellows, the cocky son of a farmer.
Q. Doesn't she love Will?
A. Will is not in her dreams, but Nashville and the rand ole osprey is.
Q. Does Carol Ann have an idol? Somebody she wants to be like?
A. Carol Anne who sees herself as Carlotta Dell takes inspiration from Loretta Lynn, the Coal Miner's daughter, who left Butcher Falls with her guitar, a stubby pencil to write her music with and heart. Lots and lots of heart.
Q. I read this book about carol ann delaney, and I read past my bedtime to learn if she became carlotta dell and at the end of the book you still didn’t tell me.
A. Sure I did! You read about her and you know her, and because you know her, you’ll know if she followed her dream, or not!
Q. I’m a lot like Carol Ann Delaney and i really believe in my talent and so does everybody who knows me. do you have any advice for me?
A. Yes. Don’t expect it to be easy. It won’t be. learn everything you can from everybody you can.
Q. My girlfriend, Paula and I read “them that glitter and them that don’t” and we both have these questions. Do you have any grandparents that are Gypsies? Are you a Gypsy? If you’re not then how did you learn so much about them?
A. My boyfriend, who was a gifted photographer, figured that the gypsy had been so hurt by wars that soon there would be no more gypsies. So he wanted to make a photographic record and he wanted me to make a written record. Well, it was an interesting assignment, and we both learned a lot. Like the fact that Gypsies aren’t dying out.
